TILLANAS

TILLANAS

A tillana is a moderately fast-paced rhythm-centric composition performed towards the end of the concert. Tillanas predominantly contain rhythmic syllables called jathis/solkattus set to a melodic framework. Though Tillanas contain lyrics, they typically appear in the last segment of the Tillana in the charanam. Tillanas are a major feature of dance performances as well.
Tillanas are composed in various ragas (melodic frameworks) and talas (rhythmic cycles), allowing for a wide range of creative expression. They are often accompanied by percussion instruments such as the mridangam, tabla, or kanjira, which accentuate the intricate rhythmic patterns and add energy to the performance.
