DIKSHITAR'S NAVAGRAHA KRTIS:Chitravina N Ravikiran

Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the Trinity composers of Carnatic music, composed a set of nine compositions known as the "Navagraha Kritis," dedicated to the nine celestial bodies or "grahas" in Hindu astrology. Each composition is dedicated to a specific graha and is sung to propitiate the planetary deity associated with it. These kritis are revered for their musical complexity, lyrical beauty, and spiritual significance. The Navagraha kritis are some of Dikshitar’s finest works and highlight his grasp of Sanskrit and knowledge of Indian astrology apart from his deep insight of raga grammar and rhythmic excellence. Being both a masterful theme-smith and tunesmith, Dikshitar has set the compositions to one of the sapta tala-s.
These kritis are not only musical compositions but also serve as prayers and invocations to the respective planetary deities, seeking their blessings and protection. They are often performed in concerts and worship ceremonies dedicated to the Navagrahas, especially during times of astrological significance or planetary transitions.
